Shopify "Mismatched product price" in Google Merchant Center: how to find the cause

Google's crawler opens each product's page and compares the price there with the price in your product data. When the two differ, Merchant Center disapproves the product and shows the issue "Mismatched product price". Google says repeated mismatches "may lead to an account suspension" (Google: How to fix mismatched product price).

What Google compares

Google reads the HTML your server returns. A price that only appears after JavaScript runs can still cause errors (same page).

The usual causes on Shopify

  1. Tax included in one price and not the other. In the US and Canada, Google wants prices without tax. In countries such as the UK, Germany and Australia, it wants prices including VAT or GST, and the page must match (Google: price attribute). A tell-tale sign: every mismatched product is off by the same percentage.
  2. Another country's prices or currency on the page. With Shopify Markets, a page can show converted prices while your product data is in your store currency. Google says the landing page must show the target country's currency prominently.
  3. Sale timing. A compare-at price or sale that started or ended on the site before your feed caught up, or a wrong sale_price_effective_date or time zone.
  4. Theme markup that is wrong or missing. Some themes write one price for the whole product, or a price range (AggregateOffer), instead of one price per variant. Some leave the variants out when a product is sold out.
  5. Slow feed updates. The site changed and the feed hasn't synced yet. The notice may also simply be stale: Google re-crawls and reapproves within hours or days once prices match.

Find it by hand (free)

  1. In Merchant Center, open Products, filter to products that need attention, and pick the "Mismatched product price" issue. Download the list if there are many.
  2. Open one affected product page in a private browser window, from the country you sell to. Note the price for the exact variant Google flagged.
  3. View the page source and search for "price" inside the application/ld+json block. Compare that number, and its currency, with the price in your Shopify admin for the same variant.
  4. If every mismatch differs by the same percentage, look at tax settings (Shopify Settings → Taxes and duties) and how your theme displays tax. If they differ by a currency-like factor, look at Markets.
  5. Fix the source (feed, tax display or theme markup), then request a review in Merchant Center.

Google's "automatic item updates" (automations) can correct small price and stock differences using your page's structured data, but Google says they are not a replacement for keeping your data in sync (Google: automations).

Checking many products at once

Catalog Truth is a free check that does steps 2 and 3 for up to 20 product pages. It reads your store's public product list (/products.json) and each product page, and lists every variant where the page's structured-data price or stock differs from your Shopify data. It also says when all the differences share one percentage (the tax pattern) or one currency-like factor. No sign-up.
